How To Upholster With Leather On A Curve - Hart & Hive

Upholstery is something I encourage you to try. It is not as daunting as it may seem and it is a great way to give a whole new look to a tired piece of furniture. Even when you're certain your furniture is outdated or doesn't fit your style, recovering it can give it an entirely new look and feel.

There are various levels of upholstery techniques and some require a lot of practice and expertise; curves, for example, can be tricky. Additionally, upholstering in leather is a different game altogether. In this quick 15 minute video you will learn all the tips and tricks you'll need to successfully upholster in leather, even curved and contoured pieces.

I have six new curved leather dining room chairs that have wrinkles on the front of all the backs. The front of the chair back is fitted so the leather can’t be stretched side to side. The back of the chair is 18” tall and has a 16 1/2” inside curve at the top that is 8” deep. The bottom of the back has a 16 1/2” inside curve that is 1” deep. How can I get the wrinkles out? Would spray glue on both surfaces help keep the leather smooth? Do you have any suggestions or recommendations that can eliminate the condition.

I hope my explanation makes sense? I can send you a picture if you mind giving me your email address.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Other than the wetting and massaging, does the same hold true when upholstering with cowhide? Specifically the cutting. Is this the most common way to get around a curved back with cowhide as well? Thanks, great video.

I came to check out this video and low and behold you are actually recovering the exact same chairs that I am currently working on! Thank you for tips!

Thanks for the video, am going to try and see if the trick of applying water to the leather can help solve a problem am having with a furniture am working on, the curves on this furniture are bigger and the leather am working with is semi animal skin.

Great video on leather use for upholstery.

Would you ever use the metal pligrip with leather? Or do you always stick to stapling?

    Thanks

Thank you that’s great. I’ve just started upholstering a leather armchair and thought I’d better check if there is anything I need to know. I’m glad I did , I’ve learnt so much after watching this!! Had no idea it had to be wet you have just adverted what would have been a very expensive disaster 😊

Hey there, thanks for this, it’s the first explanation of making and using tabs to contour! How do you do it with fabric that isn’t leather and won’t shrink? How do you know how to partition sections for an extended curved back, such as a curved chaise?
